Transforming Family Medicine

The Dublin Methodist Family Medicine Residency is an innovative outpatient-focused program designed to provide self-motivated learners an optimal educational experience. We offer a unique "office every day" experience, ensuring that ambulatory medicine remains the focus throughout every rotation.

At Dublin, new ideas and interests are welcome, and faculty will collaborate with you to ensure the training you receive prepares you to thrive as a family medicine physician.

Our Mission

To prepare family medicine physicians for practice and leadership through:

  • Collaborative, learner-focused curricula

  • Continuous quality improvement

  • Community-centered wellness

  • We are dedicated to preparing our residents to be the best outpatient family medicine doctors.

  • We continually move toward excellence by embracing thoughtful change. New ideas are welcomed and old ways frequently re-examined.

  • Our first priority is educating our residents. All services residents perform in the clinic and hospital are built around specific learning objectives.

  • Residents individually tailor their training to develop special interests and passions in the context of broad family medicine training.

  • We respect our residents as adult learners, capable of driving their own education. We facilitate their learning by providing support and resources they need to achieve their goals.

Our Philosophy of Education

Why Dublin?

  • Innovation

    New ideas are welcomed here!

  • Community

Robust community connections prepare our residents to lead.

  • Wellness

We believe healthy humans make the best doctors.

Innovation

Our residency program embraces change. If there is a better way to train the finest ambulatory-focused physicians, we are willing to try it! Here are a few of our innovative ideas:

Office every day: With few exceptions, residents see patients in our outpatient clinic every day, even on their inpatient rotations. This structure keeps our primary focus in view at all times, as residents are able to take what they learn with a specialist and immediately apply it to their own patient panels.

Longitudinal curricula: Our curriculum is enhanced by longitudinal opportunities exploring many areas within family medicine. Almost all of these tracks can be experienced together if a resident is interested in multiple options.

Resident-led education: We find as many ways as possible to allow for resident leadership with faculty and staff support. Residents lead out during didactics, run various committees, and create quality improvement initiatives.

Ambulatory feedback: We have created a unique feedback model that ensures every resident meets individually with a faculty member to receive high quality feedback once per four-week block.

Community

We prepare our residents to lead through community-centered wellness. Our PGY1s get involved in the community right away through our Community Block, a time to learn about available services throughout the city and engage in underserved patient care through a local free clinic and our Wellness on Wheels program. Our residents have participated in many community service events, such as sorting clothes at One Dublin, weeding the garden at the Van Buren Center, and volunteering at events like Uplift Her. Our unique partnership with the Dublin City Schools and our weekly clinics through Wellness on Wheels form the core of our community outreach program, and both provide residents with unique opportunities to care for patients outside of the office.

  • The OhioHealth Dublin Family Medicine School-Based Health Clinic is a community-centered primary care program that provides advocacy and healthcare services for students in Dublin City Schools, particularly those who are unable to access care due to financial barriers and other social determinants of health.

All of our residents serve in the clinic, providing well child visits, sports physicals, and vaccinations to students on site at multiple schools. The clinic runs every Wednesday morning, and we also hold free Sports Physical days twice a year.

This innovative collaboration with our community allows our resident physicians to have a lasting impact on the pediatric and adolescent populations in Dublin.

  • The Wellness on Wheels program is an OhioHealth initiative providing care via mobile clinics to underserved communities throughout Columbus. Our residency program staffs the mobile unit on Monday afternoons, located at the Van Buren Center, an emergency shelter for people experiencing homelessness.

A typical afternoon on the mobile unit includes up to six patients who are residents of the Van Buren shelter and often present with significant barriers to care due to their social determinants of health. A registered nurse and social worker are present and able to provide assistance through OhioHealth, including transportation options and free medications when needed. Our clinic is staffed by Dr. Byler and a PGY2/3 resident each week, as well as PGY1 residents during their community block.

Wellness

At Dublin Methodist, we believe that healthy humans make the best doctors. We integrate holistic wellness practices throughout our program so that our residents learn not only how to care for patients, but also how to care for themselves.

Our approach to wellness is unique and varied. Here are a few examples:

  • Our residents are self-motivated learners who are given freedom to pursue their unique interests in Family Medicine.

  • Our innovative didactic structure fosters adult learning, creativity, and individual expression.

  • Our office every day schedule promotes strong continuity relationships with office staff and patients. Daily time in the clinic allows residents to feel a sense of progression towards their final goal regardless of what rotation they are on.

  • Dr. Miller leads an Electronic Medical Record efficiency workshop every other week and meets with residents individually throughout the year to improve charting efficiency.

  • Our curriculum has built-in time during various rotations for residents to use at their discretion for personal wellness.

  • Biannual all-office retreats promote team-building through activities which foster creativity, physical activity, and mental health.

  • Annual PGY group retreats provide a day away from the hospital for individual classes to bond with each other in ways that improve communication and cohesiveness.

  • Our Wednesday didactic schedule includes multiple wellness elements. Within every block, we have PGY groups facilitated by a faculty member and an hour of free time for residents to socialize or go home early.
