Didactics

Our didactics are designed for adult learners, and frequently require residents to be directly involved in teaching. We focus more on resident led and faculty facilitated small group discussions and less on expert provided PowerPoint presentations.

We have a full didactics session on Wednesday afternoon that includes a combination of resident led Grand Rounds, behavioral topics, wellness time, and residency committee meetings. We also have didactics on Thursday afternoons from 12:30-2:00 that alternates between Sports Medicine/Ultrasound and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment.

A typical format for Grand Rounds consists of a short introductory lecture on a topic, followed by three rotating small groups taking a deep dive into three different areas within that topic. Each small group is led by a PGY2, PGY3, and a faculty member. Group activities vary from open discussion, Jeopardy style quizzing, role play, or simple lecture. Each part of the format can change based on the topic - some areas of medicine fit better into a simple PowerPoint presentation than in an interactive activity.

We are constantly innovating, and open to changes to our learning format. Each Grand Rounds ends with a survey asking for resident feedback, and we use this feedback to streamline our approach and help resident teachers improve their skills.
